This old toy gun is a Roy Rogers pistol made by the Geo. Schmidt Mfg. company of Los Angeles. The die cast cap gun is made of a plated, non magnetic white metal. The cylinder is nicely detailed in relief with flowers and leaves and there is a rope detail that creates the trim. Below the cylinder, in script relief, is the Roy Rogers signature. The metal grip slabs have a basket weave detail. At the butt of the grip slab is a circle with the RR brand and the small circle near the top of the slap has a small horseshoe and reads; And Trigger. The grip slabs, trigger and hammer are all copper colored. It breaks open to put in a roll of caps that would feed out the top. The small lever under the hammer releases the mechanism that locks it closed or releases it to break open. On the inside it reads; Geo. Schmidt Mfg.- Los Angeles, 21, Calif. - Made in U.S.A.. I believe this was originally marketed as a Shoot’n Iron in the early 1950’s.
It measures about 8 1/8” from the back of the hammer to the end of the barrel or about 10” overall and about 4” from the butt to the top of the hammer. It is visually in very nice condition with minor wear to the plating. The hammer and trigger seem to work properly but the mechanism to lock and release is worn, consequently it is loose and will not hold in the locked position well and so the barrel tends to drop.
