This old advertising canister from the early 1900's was used in old soda fountains. It was probably used for holding malted milk but it is different than many of the malt canisters. This was made for the Thompson’s Malted Food Co. of Wisconsin and in particular it was for their product called Hemo. In a 1914 article it was stated the Thompson’s Double Malted Milk Hemo, which was made with beef and iron, was “the food that builds up weak stomachs”.
This is not a painted canister, it is porcelain enamel over a metal base. It does not have the Thompson’s name but it has the documented Thompson’s shield logo on opposing sides and one panel has “Hemo”. The background is a creamy gray, Hemo is green and the shield is gray, blue and muted gold with a red “T”.
What makes this different is that it doesn’t have a removable lid. Instead, the canister portion has an attached, domed top with a hinged, porcelain enamel lid in the same color as the base. There is a gold accent line at the base of the dome and on the lid. It has its original knob on the top of the lid.
It measures about 9 ½” high to the top of the knob and about 7 ¼” in diameter. It is in good condition but there are several chips to the enamel. The enamel finish retains most of its color and gloss with minor scratch and scuff wear. There are chips under and around the nickel plated hinge. The knob on the lid is chip and dented as though it may have been dropped on the knob. There are some chips on the inside of the lid and under the edge of the lid, on the dome and near the bottom edge of the canister and one on the bottom. Overall, even with its flaws, this is an unusual soda fountain item that would display well on a back bar.
