This colorful, old cardboard box was once filled with a half pound of Whitman’s chocolate candies. The box is covered in paper that has rather obscure designs in geometric shape giving it a feeling of fancy. The Joy Box contained Assorted Vanilla, Milk and Semi-Sweet Chocolates with a wide variety of flavorful fillings according to the ingredient list on the bottom of the box. These were made by Stephen F. Whitman & Son, Inc. of Philadelphia, New York, Chicago and San Francisco. I believe this box is probably from the 1930’s or 1940’s.
It measures about 3 5/8” by 6 1/16” by 1 7/8” and is in fairly good condition with light edge and corner wear. There are some faint marks and marring on the lid where there may have been some pencil marks but it is hard to distinguish because of the busy print.
