This is a old felt beanie is reminiscent of the beanies worn by Jughead of Archie comics and Goober of the Andy Griffith Show. These hats were also marketed as Whoopee Caps and offered as cereal premiums. It is made of a thick dark brown felt (not as red as the pictures) with a rolled up brim that has a saw-toothed edge. I believe the wooden beads and bowling pin that are stapled to the band are original to the hat. Pin back buttons like ones from Pep cereal and small celluloid and plastic charms like those found in Cracker Jacks were sewn on beanies like this to personalize them. This one is like the blank canvas waiting for an artist to give it character. Probably from the late 1930’s to early 1950’s.
It is in good but used condition. It is lightly soiled and there are holes where thing were originally pinned or sewn on. There appear to be no tears. Being a soft cap, it is difficult to say what size it is but the inside edge circumference measures about 20”. The crown measures about 3” high and the brim varies measuring about 1 ½” to 2” high.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
