This porcelain piece looks like a large salt shaker or muffineer but it is actually a hatpin holder. It resembles a tower made in a basket weave pattern with a cluster of three roses, a rosebud and some greenery. The flowers have only a hint of color in the recesses and the basket weave is pale yellow. There are three holes across the top and seven holes encircling the crown so it holds ten hatpins of a length of 5” and longer. I don’t see the S & V mark embossed on the bottom (I think I can see a couple of faint crown points but I can’t be sure) however I feel quite sure that it was made by the Schafer and Vater company of Germany since I have had one of these in the past that was clearly marked. I believe this is from the early 1900’s.
It measures about 4 5/8” high and it measures about3 5/8” at the widest by 2 ½” deep. It is in very good condition with minimal wear and no damage.
