This old doll is from the Deluxe Reading company and I believe her name is Betty the Beautiful Bride. Were she not wearing white I probably won’t know if she was Betty or Sweet Rosemary or Darling Debbie or any number of similar dolls from a company that went by as many names as their dolls. A generic term for them is Grocery Store dolls as that is where the majority were purchased in the late 1950’s. The large doll is made of soft “miracle vinyl” with a wire armature so her arms and legs were supposed to be bendable. She has rooted saran hair in a short curly do. She has blue sleep eyes and eye lashes and painted lips and fingernails. She does not have pierced ears. She is marked with a series of numbers. On the back of her head it looks like 25163 and on her back is the number 20. She is dressed in a long white gown with netting and lace that is enhanced with silver.
She measures about 29 ½” tall is in fair condition with some issues. Her face is very nice and her hair is lightly mussed. Her fingers are all intact but her left arm has some discoloration and her right arm has some little back marks which I have shown in the photos. Her legs have become deformed and wrinkled, the left one more than the right. I think it is probably from the weight of her standing upright for all these years. Her feet are dirty. Her ensemble is limited and has had alterations over the years. She has no shoes or accessories. She has only the modified dress. It appears the lower half of the ruffled lace has been removed. There is also a stain on the back which I have shown in the photos. She displays well but she’s a creative seamstress’ project for sure. All condition issues have been taken into consideration in the price.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
