This old recipe book by James A. Beard is a coming together of many cuisines to create American cookery. Although Mr. Beard occasionally snubs his nose at Americans and their approach to cooking he also embraces many aspects and has complied a book of interesting recipes. From “cocktail food” to all of the usual headings found in a comprehensive cookbook the 877 pages, including the index, doesn’t waste space on elaborate photos (there are none) or step by step illustration (there are none of those either). The meager illustrations are by Earl Thollander. This is the Eight Printing of the first edition with a 1972 copyright date. It was published by Little, Brown & Company. It comes with its original dust jacket. This was a library copy.
It measures about 7 3/8” by 10 ¼” by 2 1/8” and it is in very good condition. The pages are basically crisp with a tight spine. I only noted a couple of pages which had notations like the one in the photos. The linen hardbound cover is in very good condition with minimal edge wear. The dust cover is fairly good with light scuff wear and minor edge tears. There is some tape along the top edge of the dust jacket which was probably added to reinforce the paper. This was an old library copy. It has been stamped with a date and the word Withdrawn on the inside page and across the top of the book it is stamped with the library name. There are also 2 places where the remains of a paper sticker are. One is on an inside page as show in the photo. The other is in the back of the dust jacket. There is also a library label at the lower edge of the dust jacket spine.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
