This old bisque doll is dressed in a beautifully fashioned costume. The outfit looks like it might represent the clothing worn by the men in Eastern Europe, perhaps Belarus during the early 1900’s and the doll has very short blonde mohair as a wig so I’m assuming it is supposed to be a boy. The doll has blue sleep eyes with hand painted lashes and eyebrows and an open mouth with teeth. Due to the construction and condition of the outfit I am unable to get to the lower part of the neck plate to see a mark. I think this is an Armand Marseille and possibly a 390 AM but since I can’t see a market is only an assumption. Again, because of the clothes, I am unable to say exactly what the body, arms and legs are made of but the they are not jointed and the leathers feel like they might be leather but possible fabric and not composition. The hands are bisque.

Most of the costume is made of wool felt with silk trim and hand stitched decorative details. The trousers appear to be cotton as is the little collar. The belt and the boot are made of a leatherette. The four corner hat is trimmed with a plush fabric. There is a simple belt with a brass brad and a pouch with a tuft of hair or fur. I believe this is from the late 1800’s - early 1900’s.

The doll measures about 14” tall excluding the hat. I see no cracks in the bisque and the eyes open and close properly. The bisque hands are intact without damage. The hair is cut short and not well but appears to be original and it is partially glued to the head. The clothes have seen better days but they are so interesting and I believe them to be all original. The felt has small holes, probably from moths. The coat was lined with silk but most of it has disintegrated and what remains is falling off when touched. The other trim and the wide collar which are silk are also frayed and disintegrating. There were four buttons up the front but one is missing. Quite a bit of the leatherette, both the belt and its straps and the boots are worn and weak. This does not come with a stand because I don’t have one that is the proper size.

The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
