I believe this old photo is actually a photographic process called a tintype. The image is of a young child in a dark colored outfit that appears to be a dress. The child has a sweet face but looks a bit scary with the silver sheen of the dark metal. The dress appears to be detailed with a scrolled “embroidery” and trimmed with lace, all which appears to be hand done over the image. When held at an angle the dark areas reflects a green, purple and blue sheen and the light areas are softly frosted and ghostly. Overall the image is better in the photographs than in person due to the darkening. The tin is mounted in a cardboard frame with an attached paper backing so I am unable to see if there are any identifying marks on the back, there are none on the front.
The tin portion measures just over 6 ½” by 8 ½” which would probably be close enough to be considered a whole plate rather than an imperial or mammoth. It is in fair condition with light scratch wear but since it has not been protected under glass, I fear the image has degraded. The cardboard portion measures about 8” by 10” and is in fair condition with edge and corner wear and some water spots. The backing is torn, stained and missing along the right edge. The tin is loose along the right edge also.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
