This is a very unusual old cast iron toy made by the Hubley company. The grasshopper was a pull toy and there would have been a string through the hole in the head. In theory, when it was pulled across the floor, the legs would move up and down. The fact is the grasshopper doesn't have enough weight for it to work that way. If you push it across the floor applying a little pressure the action works well. This "flaw" in design probably explains why this toy is in such good, almost un-played with condition. It is marked Hubley on the inside of the tail on one side. There is a number 1 on the bottom of one hind leg and the number 1787 on the bottom of the other.
It measures about 4 1/4" long and about 1 11/16" tall. The paint is in very good condition with minimal chips and wear. It has wear off the eyes and tail and outer front legs. The nickeled pieces are very good as well.
