The smaller size of this old Chinese cork carving does not diminish the fact that it is beautifully detailed. The pagoda, perched on an out cropping, has intricate architectural details. The surrounding plants and trees have been beautifully represented. There are two birds with white and black plumage near the base, that I believe are Chinese cranes. The carving is encased in glass with a wooden frame on a small base. The frame has a black, lacquered finish. On the bottom is a paper label that reads; San You. There are also remnants of other labels. I believe this is from the 1930’s - 1950’s.
Overall it measures about 8” high. The oval framed portion measures about 4 1/8” wide by 5 ¾” high by 1” deep and the base is about 4 7/8” wide by 2 1/8” deep. Overall it is in nice condition with minor wear. I see only one bit of damage to the carving, a plant stalk near the birds is loose and moves. There appears to be no other damage to the carving or to the glass. There is some light wear to the paint and it looks like the glass is a little dirty inside. There are stress cracks to the scroll foot of the base, I have highlighted one to bring them to your attention.
