Old Mexican Pottery - Tonala Pottery Bird with Floral Design and Nice Glaze
This nicely decorated, stylized pottery bird was made in Tonala Mexico which is apparently near Guadalajara. The bird looks somewhat like a dove or pigeon and is decorated in the fashion Tonala pieces are recognized for. A floral design fills the sides and there are two figures on the back that could be butterflies or snails. It has a glossy glaze except for the bottom which is unglazed. On the bottom of the tail it is marked; Mex Tonala. There are numbers that appear to be 377 13 and above that it appears to be the initials CAT or GAT which is probably an indication of the artist. There is a piece of green felt on the bottom which may or may not be original.
It measures about 7 ½” long and 4” high at the tail. It is in very nice condition with minimal wear and no damage.
