This attractive dresser box was probably used as an old collar and cuff box. The box is made of wood, clad with black celluloid. It is quite striking with the raised, art nouveau style design on the lid and the front panel. On the hinged lid there flowers across the top edge and the bottom edge. Between the floral design is a round medallion with the profile of a woman’s face. Next to her there is a scroll with what appears to be a mansion surrounded by trees. The woman and the scroll are adorned with grape leaves and clusters. The front panel has two fanned, geometric, floral designs. The detail is really quite nice even though everything is in black. The edges are also trimmed with a simple detail. It has an ornate brass clasp on the front and simple brass hinges on the back.
Inside it is lined with a fuchsia or hot pink colored, silk like fabric with a lined cylinder in the center where the cuffs would have been kept. The bottom is covered with a decorative paper I believe this is probably from the late 1800’s or very early 1900’s.
It measures about 6 3/8” across and 6 ½” deep. The lid is sloped so the highest point, the back, measures about 6 ¼”. It is in very nice condition with minor wear. The celluloid has a few scuffs and chips, mostly on the upper left corner of the lid which is shown in the photos. There is also a little discoloration, like a small stain, on the right panel. The brass clasp and hinges are discolored and I have not tried to clean or polish them. The fabric is generally pretty good with light soiling and a little thread bare in places. The paper on the bottom is soiled and ragged along the edges. Overall I think the piece is in fairly good condition.
