This old bell is a mechanically operated doorbell. This would have been mounted inside a home, probably with a turn key lever extending to the outside. It has a cast iron, nickel plated mounting bracket which has the patent date of March 14 1899. The dome of the bell is nickel plated brass and it is held to the back plate by a nickel plated, domed screw. It has a simple, geared mechanism that rotates a yoke containing two weights which strike against the dome to send forth a loud chime. Although a doorbell and operating lever were sometimes sold as a matched set, it was not uncommon for the two pieces to be sold separately, one piece to match the exterior décor and one to accent the interior design. This does not come with the piece of hardware that would operate the mechanism.
The bell measures about 3 3/8” in diameter and mounting plate measures about 3 3/8” by 4 ½”. It is in very nice, original, working condition. The nickel on the dome is very good with minor wear and discoloration. One half of the mounting bracket shows wear to the plating with dark discoloration. As previously stated, this is only the bell and it does not come with the turnkey mechanism.
