This is an old friction sparking toy made for Christmas. The background of the tin toy looks like a brick wall with snow covered windows and some snow covered trees at the bottom. The window areas have a translucent red plastic lens and across the top it reads; Merry Christmas. In the center of the bottom are a boy and girl with their hands raised skyward. Between them in a glowing candle. The extended lever at the bottom operates a mechanism when depressed which causes Santa Claus to rise from the top of the chimney with his arm wide spread. It also spins a wheel behind the “brick” wall”. There are two arms on the wheel that would have flint that would rub on an abrasive disk causing sparks light through the windows. The lever and mechanism work but it appears the flint are gone and I haven't figured out exactly how to put new ones in. Perhaps it was intended to throw away after the flint wore out. It is marked Made in Japan and I believe this is from the 1950’s.
It measures about 2 5/8” wide by 5” in overall length including the plunger. Although it is larger than a penny toy it would go well in that type of collection. Overall it is in fairly nice condition with minor scratch wear. As previously stated the mechanism works but it no longer sparks since the flint has worn out.
