This old battery operated lantern depicting a wickedly grinning witch is made of celluloid. The face of the hag has a lot of character with wrinkles, dramatic eyes, silver hair and of course and long nose. The gray hood, hair, mouth, eyes and brows are all painted over the colored celluloid. The head sits on a metal base that holds the battery and there is a small metal cap that is secured by a small screw at the top of the bail. This takes a single "C" battery and a small bulb for operation and it is quite fun when lit. It has a on/off lever in the back. This comes with the original, plastic strap so it could be tied to a child’s wrist or hung for decoration. The bottom of the base is marked Made In Japan and I believe it dates from the 1950's.
It measures about 4 ½” to the top of the thumb screw and the base measures about 2 3/8” in diameter. It is in very good, working condition with light scuff wear to the painted areas. The nose has a crease and a split which I have shown in the photo. There is a blemish to the paint on the base and some pitting and discoloration to one side of the battery post. I have shown these flaws in the photos. The plastic strap has a couple of knots and is crimped and wrinkled in places.
