This is a pretty example of an old micro mosaic pin. Small glass canes are cut into little tiles that are called tesserae to make this miniature art work. The colors in this are bright and beautiful. In the center is a large flower that resembles a rose that goes from purple in the center to lavender with white tips on the outer petals which gives the illusion of shading. Some of the little pieces are actually rods of glass that are shaped like tiny flowers. The tiles are set in a brass mount with an outer edge detailed with tiny beads. The back has a simple c-closure pin that resembles a modified safety pin. It is stamped Made in Italy on the back and is probably from the early part of the 1900’s.
The oval pin measures about 1 1/8” wide by 7/8” high and 3/16” thick excluding the pin. The workmanship is very fine on this little brooch and the condition is very good with no noticeable missing tiles. There are a few tiles which are set deeper than surrounding tiles but it doesn't appear that any are missing. There is one orange tile set with a band of red tiles that appears out of place but it doesn't look like it was tampered with and it is probably original.
