This colorful celluloid monkey playing a guitar is an old wind up toy. When the monkey is wound he moves his right arm up and down as though strumming a guitar while moving his head back and forth. A chime melody which has no resemblance to a string instrument plays from within the monkey. Once the music stops he continues to strum and move his head until the spring winds down. He is sitting on a tin stump which is tacked onto a piece of green, painted wood. On the bottom it is stamped; Made in Occupied Japan. It is in very good working condition with vivid colors, minimal wear. The back of the right arm has a split in the celluloid which I have shown in the photos. There is a small amount of rub wear on the back of the stump and one of the tack tabs is broken off the base of the stump but that was probably done in the manufacturing since there is no tack hole in the wood. The base measures just over 3 ¼” wide and 3” deep and the overall height is about 7 ½”.
This toy is shown in Kitahara's Wind-ups book as being Monkey Guitarist by Alps but this particular one comes with its original box that has a colorful paper label that reads; “Sambo” The Minstrel Man. It does have the Alps - Made in Japan Trade Mark in the lower right lower of the label. The box measures about 7 ¾” high by about 3 3/8” square. The box is in generally good condition with light wear except for the fact that the top flap is missing. There is a small piece of one top flap but is has actually been torn off but someone has held it on with a piece of strapping tape.
