This is an old pattern catalogue that would have been in browsed through at the fabric counter at J.C. Penney’s. Penny’s was apparently the exclusive retailer for Advance Patterns from the early 1930’s through the mid 1960’s. This was the January 1949 edition and it shows hundreds of fashions that were available in pattern, many that were “featured in Mademoiselle”. The fashions for women include evening and casual wear, suits coats and bridal wear, lingerie and domestic wear. It has sections on teens, children (both boys and girls), babies and men. It is an interesting book filled with some wonderful styles of the period. It would make great reference material for someone doing theater costumes or be an inspiration to a designer that uses elements of the past. Most of the fashions have a colored illustration of the modeled outfit and a line drawing of the back. IT also has the sizes the pattern was available in, the yardage requirement and the price (in 1949). The pages are numbered but does not start with page 1 and there are large gaps in the sequence. This must have been in the original production of the book because it does not look like there are many pages actually missing. I did not count the pages but I believe there are more than 200.

It measures about 10 7/8” wide (with tabs extending 1 ½” further) by 13 ½” by ¾” and is in nice but used condition. The covers, both front and back, have edge wear, tears, wrinkles and soiling. Most of the inner pages are clean and lightly age discolored although I noted a few that were wrinkled and a couple that were torn. All of the section tabs are curled and discolored. The worst thing is that some started making this into a recipe scrap book using the large pages to glue in their favorite snipped recipes. They covered about twelve of the first pages in that manner. The book also has a musty odor though I see no water damage except for a few spots on the outer, section tabs.

The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
