This old box looks like mahogany but is probably made of a non-descript wood that is finished to resemble mahogany. It is horizontally ribbed on the sides which sort of camouflages where it opens. It has recessed brass hinged on the back side. Inside there is a maroon, velvet covered insert in the bottom and the lid has a fabric covered liner with matching side pieces. This was probably used on a dresser for a gentleman’s fine jewelry. The bottom of the box is covered with a black paper.
It measures about 6 1/8” wide by 3 5/8” deep and 2 ¼” high when closed and is in nice condition with light nick and scuff wear. The velvet insert show minimal wear but the light fabric in the lid and around the edges is lightly stained. It also appears to have a few pin holes, probably from stickpins.
