These old dolls are made of painted white bisque and they were made in Germany. There heads are strung onto their bodies which is why they were called nodders. They both have adorable faces with side glancing eyes. She seems slightly shy with a faint smile and he appears rather full of himself with an open smile. She has a green shawl and red shoes and there is a purple purse hanging from her wrist. On her head is a bonnet with red trim and in her hand is a little paper flower. He’s wearing a purple vest, a large yellow bow tie and brown shoes. His hat is also trimmed with red and what appears to be a shamrock. He also has a paper flower in his hand. The back of both pieces are marked; Germany.
This are different from many of the other nodders. They do not have a hole in the top of their heads, instead, there is a small piece of metal in their heads. The elastic goes through the piece of metal, through the bottom of the head and into the bodies. Her is tied off between her feet and his is tied off below his coat tail. I believe these were from the early 1900’s.
They measure about 3 ½” high and are in good condition with minor wear. Each has a little bit of paint wear but the paint on her shawl shows the most wear. The elastic on both is age worn. There heads balance on their bodies as you can see in the photos but the heads are loosely strung and the heads need to be balanced just so or the head falls to the side which can cause them to topple. I believe they could be restrung but it would take some patience and know how. They are being sold as is with this information in mind.
