Vintage, Popeye Balloon Pump - 1957 Copyright by King Features Syndicate
Save Your Breath says Olive Oly on this old balloon pump featuring Popeye and all of his friends. The pump consists of two card tubes that fit one inside the other. By placing a balloon in the hole at the top and then sliding the tubes together and apart, the balloon was said to inflate. When the tubes are nearly pulled apart you see the full image of the “sailor man” as he is shown demonstrating the pump. This originally came with 25 balloons but not a one remains. Images of Swee’Pea, Olive-Oyl, Bluto (Brutus) and Whimpy are also on the blue and white striped toy pump. The Inflato-Pump was made by the Van Dam Rubber Co., Inc under exclusive license by Ideal Corp. This has a 1957 copyright by King Features Syndicate, Inc..
The pump measures about 13” high when fully extended and 6 7/8” high when collapsed. The top measures about 3 1/8” in diameter and the bottom is about 3”. It is in fair condition with some scuff and edge wear and soiling, especially on the outer tube. The metal on the top and bottom is dark and discolored. I wasn’t able to try is out with a balloon but it puts out a pretty good puff of air and I have to think that it probably works as well as it ever did, however, it is being sold as-is.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
