This is a very nice example of an old, micro mosaic picture frame. Small glass canes are cut into little tiles that are called tesserae to make this miniature art work. The tesserae are in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes making up this little floral arrangement which is mostly blue and pink flowers. Most of the back fill tiles are white and the inner and outer boarder pieces have a black and white geometric design. There is a twisted brass bezel on the inside edge of the bevel. The back is not marked but I would imagine that this was made in Italy. Unfortunately it has no glass, back or easel support. This could be used with a miniature brass plate stand or, with a little ingenuity I think someone might be able to put a hanging device an the back.
It's a rather small frame measuring about 3 1/8” high by 2 5/8” wide at the bottom with an oval picture opening of approximately 1 3/8” by 1 ¾”. The workmanship is very fine on this little frame and the general condition is good with only a few missing pieces and a few damaged tiles. However, as previously stated, this has no glass, back or easel support and one of the swivel tabs for holding the picture in is broken off. These flaws have been taken into consideration in the price.
