This is a remarkable vintage map for the Clearwater National Forest of Idaho. The folding map is printed on cloth and comes in its original envelope which calls this a Sportsman Encyclopedia Washable Map. One side has a detailed area map including a scale. The top of the map speaks to the fact that the forest is a recreational area and suggests that as such it should be guarded as your own. Around the map there are drawings to illustrate some of the safety precautions that should be taken while in the forest, many of them using a bear that resembles Smokey and using slogans like Prevent Forest Fires. The map is dated 1947 but there is a 1948 copyright by Paul T. Burbidge of Boise, Idaho.
The other side of the map is an incredible piece of outdoor reference. The top portion has two charts. One chart references lakes and the other, streams. It gives the name, location, size, depth, accessibility and type of fish present in 1947 plus a few other statistics. The rest of the sheet is divided into sections. There is a section with the anatomy of a fish, the art of casting and knots used with fishing line. There is a section on first aid which shows how to treat injuries that might occur in the forest. It has the statement; Use THIS MAP as Illustrated, and then shows ways to apply bandages. There is a section for hunters with basic information on the safety of ones self as well as the kill. There are diagrams for butchering and dressing game, tracking deer, laying a course with a compass and a chart of Comparative Figures of Modern Ammunition. The perimeter of this side has numerous flies and although each fly is in black & white, most of them have color notations as a guide.
This is really an extraordinary old map. The lightweight fabric, probably linen, measures about 28” by 36” or 4” by 6 ¼” folded. The sides are finished salvage edges and the top and bottom were cut with pinking shears. It is in very good condition and appears to have only been unfolded a few times and always refolded on the original fold lines. I took care in unfolding it minimally while taking photos. It is very clean, without damage and no soiling. Some of the fold lines are very slightly yellowed from age. Overall it is in very fine condition.
The original paper envelope measures about 4 7/8”by 7 ½”. It has a nice etching of a forest stream with deer along the banks and a trout jumping out of the water. Below the graphics it reads; A Sportsman’s Paradise. The original price on the map was $2.50 and it was manufactured by Les Bois Map Co. of Boise. The envelope is in fair condition with worn edges and tears but it has done a nice job protecting the map. Inside the envelope is a paper listing other maps that were available for Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Wyoming.
