This delicate old lamp is advertising vintage shoes. It has a feel of being from the arts and crafts period by the shape of the base and the cut on the top and bottom edge of the shade. The shade is made of paper backed cardboard which is cut away so the light shines through the paper. Two panels have a red paper and the alternating panels have blue paper backing. The red sides, which are opposing, read; The Pacific Shoe For Better Dressed Women. The blue sides read; The Atlantic Shoe For Better Dressed Men. Besides the name being cutaway there is a floral and geometric design that is cut. The words across the bottom are lettered in gold and some of the cutaway area is also enhanced with gold paint. The corner seams appear to be reinforced on the inside with a thin, textured paper and on the outside with a thin, smooth paper. Stamped into the inside, bottom edge of each panel it reads; Kaufmann & Strauss Co. New York - Saxony.
The top of the shade has a stiff piece of cardboard that has small holes in it. Four wires are inserted into holes and then into the wood lamp base. The shade can be removed and laid flat which is how it will be shipped.
The wood, candlestick style base is made of a non descript wood, probably mahogany, with a light finish. It has an old brass socket that takes a short, standard base, screw-in light bulb. It appears to have its original, silk wrapped electric cord with a bakelite plug end. I believe this beautiful adverting lamp is from the early part of the 1900’s.
Overall it measures about 19 ¼” high. The shade measures about 12 ½” square at the bottom edge tapering to 2 5/8” square at the top in a 9 ½” slope. The base measures about 8 1/8” square. It is in nice condition but has some condition issues. It is in working condition. The shade, being made of cardboard and paper, shows some wear. The outside corner seams show splits but the tears do not go through so the shade is still stable. The thin paper does have some holes, some are damage and some appear to be deterioration or inferior paper. There is also some minor soiling. There is a dark stain on one leg of the base. The wrapped cord has some frayed and worn areas but the wire is in tact and it is still operable, however, it might be wise for it to be rewired.
