This is a very pretty, combination pin & pendant from the early 1900's by the jewelry company Sammartino Brothers of Providence, Rhode Island. It appears to be, at least in part, a hand painted portrait, presumably on porcelain with a thin piece of protective glass over the top. The woman is reminiscent of Marie Antoinette with the white pompadour and the beautiful clothing of the 1700’s. The glass covered portrait is set in a thin, gold filled bezel which is accented by a twisted band around the outer edge. The back has tabs which are securing the portrait to the bezel. It has a locking clasp pin and a swivel loop so this can be worn as a necklace or as a pin. The back plate has a logo with two griffons and the initials SB. It is also marked; Sammartino Brothers - Providence R.I. - 1/20 12k. The chain loop is also marked 1/20 12k. It’s a charming piece of vintage jewelry.
It measures about 1” by 1 ¼” overall with the portrait portion measuring about ¾” by nearly 1”. It is in very nice condition with minimal wear. The clasp is in working condition. There is a fine line along the right side that I have pointed out in the photo. This appears to be under the glass. I can’t determine if there is a fracture in the porcelain or whether it is a just a discoloration. Either way, it has been noted and is being sold as is.
