This colorful, lithographed tin board is an old target practice game called Wild Africa. An elephant is charging through the center target and his trunk is worth 25 points. The yellow circle around him is worth 125 points. There are eight other African animals; rhinoceros, hyena, leopard, zebra, giraffe, bear, antelope, and tiger, with point values ranging from 50 to 100. The colors of the animals and the background of mountains, trees and green foliage are all quite vibrant. On the bottom edge it reads; Made in U.S.A. - Durable Toy & Novelty Corp - New York, N.Y.. The tin board is has a red, painted tin frame. The back is cardboard with a heavy gauge wire easel. This would make a beautiful wall hanging!
The object of the game is explained in the directions on the front of the original cardboard box. It says each player was allowed 3 shots at the target and that it was not necessary to use force in throwing the darts. It tells where a dart scores and that the highest score wins. The direction panel is along the right edge of the box that has a black and white line drawing that resembles the target board. The box also identifies the game as Wild Africa and says it was made by the makers of Uncle Sam’s Register Savings Banks and Cash Registers. One end flap says “ Box of Three Darts Inside Carton”. I believe this is from the early 1930’s.
The tin board measures about 14” by 23 1/8” by 7/8” and is in very nice condition with minor creases and dents and scuff wear. It has generally good gloss with some small areas of dullness. The frame has light scuff wear and the corners aren’t tight fits but that appears to be in the manufacturing. I think some of the wear is from rubbing as it has gone in and out of the box.
The cardboard box measures about 14 ¼” high by 1 ¼” deep and was probably about 24 ½” long. It shows obvious wear with most of the left side missing. The other end has torn and partially missing corners and there is an 8” tear down the front about 5”-6” from the right hand side and there is general crease and edge wear. The box also has some soiling but all in all it is still nice to have a portion of the box, especially with the name and instructions. It does not come with darts.
