Vintage, Pedestal Egg by Evans - Beautiful Blue Enameled Guilloche
This decorative egg was made by the Evans Case Co. of North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The original use for the egg was to house a cigarette lighter by the same company. The old lighter is no longer with this piece but it does not take away from the visual beauty of it. The royal blue, enameled egg is mounted on a decorative, non magnetic pedestal base that is probably made of brass or at the least, is brass plated. There is a metal band around the center where it is hinged and there is a flame finial on the top which has the same motif as the base. Inside there is a metal ring with a circular opening where the lighter would have fit. The Evans logo is stamped into the metal near the hinge. The bottom of the base has the original felt. Even though this is not a Faberge egg it is still a beautiful piece that could be used to hold cigarettes, trinkets, potpourri or even a stash of fancy mints. I believe this is from the mid 1950’s.
It measures about 6 5/8” tall and the egg measures about 2 5/16” in diameter where it opens. It is in very good condition with minimal wear and no damage other than missing the lighter. The metal has its original finish and has not been polished. The felt on the bottom has some deterioration as though a critter might have been eating at it. The lid is heavier than the base so it cannot be displayed with the lid open if there is nothing of weight in the bottom of the egg.
