Vintage, Elk Lodge, Membership Card Holder
This piece of Elks memorabilia has been described as many things but I believe is was meant to hold a BPOE identification paper. It is hinged at the bottom and has a latch at the top. The front has a delicately chased design and in the center is the Elk lodge logo with a relief elk head. The elk head is simply detailed and it has no additional embellishments like enameling or stones. Nestled in the stag antlers there is the enameled clock emblem. At the bottom, near the hinge, there is an undecorated rectangle which was probably intended for a monogram. Inside are two "clips" under which something could be placed. On one side it reads; Hello and on the other it says; Bill. The Hello Bill saying originated in the late 1800’s due to William Goddard, a member of Lodge #44 of Minneapolis. Since that time “Hello Bill” has apparently been recognized as a friendly greeting between lodge members. It appears to have F. (or R.) M.Co stamped on the Bill portion which was probably the manufacturing company. It is goldtone in color but it is not stamped so I assume it is a gold plated or gold filled base metal. I have had this type of piece before that has had a loop across the top edge so it could be used as a watch fob. This has no loop so it was apparently just meant to be carried in a vest pocket or the likes.
It measures about 15/16” wide by 2” in the closed position. It is in good condition with minor wear. There is a little base metal showing through in areas, especiall along the edges and at the clip.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
