This beautiful, low bowl is an old piece of cut glass that is sometimes referred to as a small berry bowl or a whipped cream. In the center it is signed with an acid mark of a five point star in a circle. This mark was used by L. Straus & Son of New York and by the Libbey Glass Co. of Ohio. I believe this piece is a Libbey blank and the cut design is very similar to a pattern called Gemini which was designed by William C. Anderson’s American Cut Glass Company.
The rim of this bowl has a scalloped sawtooth edge that is interesting because the teeth are somewhat crudely rounded except for the two in each valley, they are pointed. This appears to be typical of some Libbey pieces. The beautiful pattern has three 16 point hobstars that sit above smaller, 12 point hobstars that are flanked with crosshatching. There are three alternating panels that are pointed ovals with a 12 point hobstar in the center and crosshatching above and below (the examples I have seen noted as Gemini have three hobstars in this vesica). These three pointed ovals has a notched cut edge and are surrounded by a feather like cutting.
I believe this piece is from the late 1880’s to the early 1900’s, the period considered the Brilliant Age or ABP.
It measures about 6 1/8” in diameter and 1 ½” at its highest peak. It is in very nice condition with light wear. As previously stated the saw tooth edge appears to be slightly crude and irregular. There is one tooth that is definitely chipped as I have shown in the photos and there is a bit of roughness on a few others. There appear to be no cracks or other damage.
