The amount of detail in this old, Chinese cork carving is truly beautiful. There are basically two separate scenes within one frame. From the intricacies of the architectural elements to the delicate fronds of the plants and trees it really is amazing to study. There are numerous birds with white and black plumage that I believe are Chinese cranes. The carving is encased in glass with a wooden frame which has a base with Oriental details. The frame has a rich dark brown/black, lacquered finish. On the bottom are two paper labels, one that reads; San You and the other that reads; Made in China with Oriental characters. I believe this is from the 1930’s - 1950’s.
Overall it measures about 8 5/8” high. The oval framed portion measures about 11 ½” wide by 7 ½” high by 2 ¾” deep and the base is about 12 1/2” wide by 3 ¾” deep. Overall it is in nice condition with minor wear. I see only one bit of damage to the carving which I have pointed out in the photos. There is a bird, beak down on one side, otherwise there appears to be no other damage to the carving or to the glass. There is some light wear to the paint and it looks like the glass is a little dirty inside.
