Russian Matryoshka Hand-Painted Nesting Stacking Dolls

This is a wonderful Russian matryoshka doll purchased in Russia in the late 1980s. Matryoshka dolls are also known as Babushka dolls, stacking dolls, nesting doll, Russian tea dolls, or Russian dolls. These dolls are made of a set of wooden dolls in decreasing sized placed one inside another. The first Russian doll was made in 1890 the artists Vasily Zvyozdochkin and Sergey Malyutin. Their design, which was followed by other artists, traditionally has a woman in the outer doll, dressed in a sarafan---a long and shapeless Russian peasant jumper dress. Although the inner dolls, don't have to all woman, they typically are, as is the case here.

The history of Russian doll crafts is interesting. One artist, Mamontov created the Children's Educational Workshop to make and sell children's toys. Although it only lasted a few years, the tradition was relocated to Sergiyev Posad.

This was probably made as a toy, and is rather old. It is stamped, "Made in U.S.S.R." on the bottom.
