Victorian Rosewood Writing Desk, Slope, Lap Desk

This is a gorgeous Victorian portable writing desk with many box maker features used in 18th and 19th century boxes in England and France. It is made of rosewood, and the box maker made use of the natural striations in the rosewood to create natural sweeps and layers highlighting the light and dark features of rosewood. The portable writing desk uses fielded panels and gadrooning to give a sense of depth to the box. A fielded panel is a raised or recessed (in this case) surrounded by a 1 3/8 inch flat panel of rosewood. Panels are used on the top and front of the box. Around the edge of the panel is a carved series of convex and slightly slanted darker rosewood. We've labeled one image to illustrate the location of the panels and gadrooning.

There is a brass escutcheon, side lift handles and vacant cartouche. The lock and latch work perfectly and include the key. The lock is hallmarked with a looped figure. The lock is by Cooper of London and Sheffield.

Additional decoration includes pewter double stringing and mother-of-pearl roundels around the fielded panels.

The green and decorated gold writing surface (skiver) has been replaced, as has been the criss cross tapes to the rear of lower fall. There are two secret drawers together with a false base compartment which is revealed when you lift the board seen when you open the upper fall. The writing desk is fully fitted with ink pots, pen tray and sloped compartment.

Measurements: 15 1/2 inches wide, 10 inches deep, and 6 1/4 inches high. The overall condition of the box is very good. The rosewood, mother-of-pearl, pewter and gadrooning are in very good order.

This is an unusual and interesting box. It would be a beautiful gift, and would be a great addition to a collection or an office desk.
