Vintage 66 Foot Leather Cover with Cloth Measuring Tape, J. C. Chesterman Company, Sheffield, England
This cloth measuring tape is marked on each side, Chesterman, Sheffield, England. There are hallmark on the tape measure itself. Between the 2 and 3 link marks, these hallmarks are included: Chesterman, Sheffield, England. On the brass handle, used to retract the tape measure, you will see marks "66 Ft." When you open the handle, is the word "Patent."
This is 66 foot tape measure (Gunter's chain length) by J. C. Chesterman Company, Sheffield, England. The tape measure is marked on each side. Measurements on one side are in inches and feet. The other side uses the "link" system or Gunter's Link. A Gunter's chain was a metal chain 66 feet long with 100 link marks and would have been used in surveying. A link is 66/100 of a foot, or 7.92 inches. This tape measure is the length of a Gunter's chain.
The leather is in good condition, with some user marks. The measurements are 4 3/4 inches in diameter, and 1 inch in width.
