English Robone's Metallic Tape Measure, Leather Case 33 Feet
This is 33 foot metallic tape measure by John Rabone & Sons from Birmingham, England. The tape measure is marked on each side. Measurements on one side are in inches and feet. The other side uses the "link" system or Gunter's Link. A Gunter's chain was a metal chain 66 feet long with 100 link marks. This tape measure would also be used in surveying. A link is 66/100 of a foot, or 7.92 inches.
This tape measure is marked on the side with the retractable handle, "John Rabone & Sons, Birmingham, England. On the other side the marks are "Rabone's Metallic Wired Tape." There is another hallmark on the tape measure itself. Between the 3 and 4 link marks, these hallmarks are included: John Rabone & Sons, Makers, Birmingham; Trade Mark with three triangles above the words Hockley Abbey; Metallic Tape. On the brass handle you will see "33 Ft, No. 400." When you open the handle, there is a helpful reminder: An arrow with the words "wind this way."
Printed on one side of the case is word "Stores." Presumably this measure was used in a store. There is light wear to the leather.
The leather case is 3 3/4 inches in diameter, and 1 inch wide.
