George III Mahogany Brass Campaign Writing Slope, Writing Desk, Lap Desk, c1815
A fine quality George III campaign writing slope in mahogany with brass supports. This gorgeous campaign box ranks as one of the finest that we have brought back from England. It was sold to us by one of the finest antique writing slope dealers in the UK.
The campaign writing slope has a brass escutcheon and an engraved cartouche (H. H. S). The writing desk has a workable lock with the key.
The writing desk is fitted with the original ink bottles with some of the original ink still within. Beautiful leather Victorian skivers cover the falls inside the box. The leather is embossed in gold gilt and is beautiful.
There is a side document drawer which is released by a sprung pin which locks when the box is closed.
Furthermore there are two secret compartments and two blocks of secret drawers. I've shown the arrangement of these secret drawers in one of the images that shows three pictures. If you buy this box, I'll walk you through how to get to the secret drawers. The top picture shows three compartments beneath the upper fall, two smaller ones and a large central one. The triangular vertical boards lift out and when that is completed, the three panels can be moved. The space beneath the panels are secret drawers. Beneath the panel on the left are two additional secret drawers that pop out when the corner of the wall of the space is pushed in. So, in all, there 5 secret drawers. The drawers are dovetailed and finished in parquetry banding.
The campaign box measures 18 inches wide, 10 1/4 inches deep, and 6 1/2 inches high.
This is a very rare find. It's a beautiful piece of furniture.
