Tunbridge Ware Burr Walnut Jewelry/Sewing Box with Tray, c1890
This is a burr walnut box from England keeping jewelry or sewing items. The domed box is in very good condition. The inlay work is beautiful with a mother of pearl at the key hole. There are two tunbridge ware style bands along the lid and front of the box. The workmanship is wonderful. The burr walnut is in fine condition. There is some wear along the left edge at the front of the box and there is a small nick at the front of the box bottom right. On the lid there is a light streak along the inside of the right tunbridge ware band.
The lid closes perfectly and the hinges are in good shape. The interior of the box is in very good condition. It is lined with purple velvet cloth. The removable tray has all of the dividers forming the array of compartments. The central compartment has a lid with a walnut pull tab. The interior may have relined, but the fabric is a perfect match for the box.
The box could serve as a wonderful modern jewelry box, even though the box might have originally been used as a work/sewing box.
The box measures 11 inches wide, 7 1/2 inches deep, and 4 21/32 inches high.
