These are two books, in four volumes of the Life of Samuel Johnson, the English writer who greatly influenced English literature as a poet, essayist, literary critic, biographer, and editor. The books were written by the Scottish Biographer James Boswell who best known for his biography of Johnson.
These leather bound books were published in 1859 in London by Routledge, Warner, & Routledge. The books are bound in 3/4 leather bindings. The leather is a rich red color. The spine has 5 raised ridges with 2 gold text blocks. The end pages are beautifully marbleized in red and blue. There is a bit of foxing on a few of the beginning pages of each book, but otherwise the texts are clean and free of rips. Each text is complete.
