Voyages en Zigzag, Excursions in the French and Italian Alps by Rudolph Töpffer, Leather Bound, Paris, 1844
This a complete edition in two volumes of Voyages en Zigzag by Rudolph Töpffer of his hiking trips in the French and Italian Alps.
Töpffer's father was a painter, and Rudolph wanted to follow in his foot steps, but an eye defect prevented him pursuing a career in the visual arts. He instead turned to literature, which included this work of his excursions in the Alps, but he also developed "histories en images" which were picture stories which are considered the precursors to comic strips.
The Voyages en Zigzag is in two volumes, measuring 7 1/2 inches by 10 1/2 inches. The books are bound in brown leather with gold stringing on the covers, as well red and black text blocks on the spine. The spine has five raised edges and gold tooling designs and letters for the texts. The bindings are strong. There are scuff marks on the covers.
The voyages span the time frame 1837 - 1842. The texts are well illustrated throughout the two volumes. The text is complete in each volume. Pages number 544 in the two volumes. There is an inscription on the end page in each book in English.
There is minor foxing through the books. The texts are not only complete, but are clean and free of marks or tears.
