French/English Papier Mâché Mother-of-Pearl Inlaid Box, 19th Century
This is a French or English Papier Mâché mother-of-pearl inlaid jewelry box. The box has the original paper lined in the interior. The original straps used to hold the lid upright are in the interior.
The special qualities of the mother-of-pearl, the papier mâché, and gold gilt painting used together create a stunning box. The decoration on the lid of the box uses large and smaller pieces of mother of pearl with wonderful iridescence as flowers. The stems are painted using gold gilt paint. The corners of the lid are decorated with a floral design using mother of pearl pieces, and painting. A design on the front of the box makes use of a variety of paint colors.
The box includes a working lock and key, as shown in the photos.
The shape of box takes on a slightly curved surface on the lid making the box quite ascetic. The box measures 7 3/4 inches wide, 5 3/4 inches deep, and 3 5/16 inch high. The box sits on a frame that give it depth.
This is a wonderful example of Victorian Era craftsmanship. The box was purchased in England from one of our trusted dealers; he indicated that he thought it was made in France.
