Chamber's Edinburgh Journal, Volumes 1849 and 1850
We have two of the volumes of Chamber's Edinburgh Journal, which was published as a weekly 16-page magazine. It has had a long history of publication, being published up until 1956.
We have two years worth of the weekly magazine, 1849 and 1850. The weekly was published on saturdays, and you will be able to scan the volumes to find out about the editors choices for the volumes. For example in the 1849 Volume, during the week January 27, 1849, there is a an article, "Gold-Finding in California." The article starts off with this: "The Americans appear to have some additional and unexpected reasons for congratulating themselves on the recent acquisition of California from Mexico. In the northern part of this territory, in the month April last, it was discovered that gold abounded in the beds of rivers and ...." You'll find other interesting stories in the two volumes.
The volumes are bound in brown 3/4 leather and marbleized boards (which you can see have been rubbed a bit.) Gilt letters are used on the spines, along with gilt lines separating the six compartments on the spines. The leather is good, a bit of wear on the edges, but otherwise quite nice. A nice two volume collection of Chamber's Edinburgh Journal.
