Here we have two very large volumes of The Works of Shakespeare, published as the Imperial Edition, which was edited by Charles Knight, London: J.S. Virtue & Co.
The 2 volumes are folio size, with engraved front pieces, 28 engraved plates, Vol. I, 18 engraved plates, Vol. II. The illustration on steel by C.W. Cope, W.P. Frith, C.R. Leslie, D. Maclise, E.M. Ward, C. Clint, H.S. Marks, W.Q. Orchardson are all with tissue guards.
Contents: Volume I contains 14 Comedies, 9 Histories; Volume II contains 1 History; 14 Tragedies, 5 Poems, 13 Plays Ascribed to Shakespeare, Notice of Opinion on the Writings of Shakespeare; Index, & The Biography of William Shakespeare. There are more than 800 pages per volume.
The books have the original gilt-stamped home of Shakespeare, as well as the gilt letters "The Imperial Shakespeare. Gilt designs and letters on the spines, as well as on the leather edges on the front and back covers. The books are bound in 3/4 leather with green boards, which are heavy and strong. The leather is a bit rubbed along the binding, and on the corners. The text page edges are gilt. Marbleized red end pages in each volume, in nice condition. Volume I hinge was loose, but has been repaired. Volume II hinge is fine, some rubbing and wear at the bottom. Foxing on end pages, but the rest of the text is clean. All pages are intact, without marks.
The books measure 11 1/2 inches x 14 13/16 inches, and each weighs 15 lbs.
