The History of England by Dr. Smollett As a Continuation to Hume, Cooke's Edition, Historical Engravings, c. 1820
The History of England, in 12 Volumes by T. Smollett (1721 - 1771) as a continuation to Hume. Published in London, by Cooke.
The volumes are bound in brown suede leather with a red text block on the spine with gold lettering. The leather most likely has suffered water damage. Volume III has been through the most damage, and there is a bit of similar damage on a small section of Volume V.
The books were written by Tobias Smollett, a Scottish poet and author. He wrote novels, which influenced Charles Dickens, and wrote other books related to his travels. However, he considered his major work, The Complete History of England which he wrote between 1757 - 1765. During this time, he went to prison for a short period of time for libel, but wrote a novel while there.
This is a complete set of Smollett's History of England. The text of the 12 volumes is complete, and except for some staining from the suede leather on the end pages, the pages are clean. The books measure 3 3/4 inches by 5 3/4 inches.
