Large English Pewter Food Dome, James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield
A magnificent English Pewter Dish Cover (Dome) by James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield. This very large pewter dome measures 19 3/4 inches long, 15 1/2 inches wide, 11 inches including the handle. The makers mark is the one used from 1851-1879. On one end of the dome there is an retractable hanger that can be used during storage.
The removable handle to the pewter dome has a design of a vine with leaves. The handle fits beautifully but I am specious that this is a replacement piece for the original design. This handle may have been made from British metal as the Dixon ‘factory’ was famous for many different types of metal being used including sterling silver items.
