English Tulipwood Double Tea Caddy
This is a wonderful English double tea caddy with a mixing bowl. The earliest tea caddies, like this one, were made using wood canisters. These tea canisters were lined usually with tin foyle. Each of the canisters inside this tea caddy show most of original lining of the foil. Most linings were made of a tin-lead alloy. Later, the canisters were made of metal, such as pewter.
This tulipwood (Brazil, much like rosewood) tea caddy is shaped in the oblong design with room inside for two canisters and mixing bowl. The tulipwood has two age cracks on the lid, but this gives it a unique characteristic. There is another crack along the backside near the top of the lid. The tulipwood for the most part is fair to good condition.
Opening the tea caddy reveal the two canisters and a central glass mixing bowl. The bowl, which is not original to the piece, could be used to mix two types of teas, or for sugar. Each wood canister can be lifted out, as shown in the photos. Each measures 2 7/8 inches wide, 4 7/8 inches deep, and 4 1/8 inches high. The wood caddy has a brass hinge for opening and closing the lid of the canister. At one time it appears that there has been one repair on the lid of the left canister.
The tea caddy measures 11 3/4 inches wide, 6 inches deep, and 5 3/4 inches high. The base of the caddy is lined with green velvet cloth.
A wonderful tea caddy box that would be stunning on a desk, or book shelf. C.1840
