Northamptonshire Boxwood Skittle Pins and Cheeses with Original Tin
This set of Northamptonshire skittles was purchased in England as a complete set in the original tin box with brass lock and plate on the lid. The skittle set for sale includes 9 pins and 3 cheeses, shaped like Dutch cheese. The pins and cheeses are made of boxwood, very hard wood. The pins are top heavy, as seen in the photos, because they are wider at the top than the bottom. The pins measure 6 inches high, and 1 9/16 inches in diameter at the base. The cheeses are 3 7/8 inches in diameter, and 1 1/2 inches thick. The skittles have been used. Some of the skittle pins have cracks, which give them a nice patina and vintage look. The cheeses also have user marks on them. But keep in mind, if you were a pin, you would be knocked over by a fast moving piece of cheese wood.
Northamptonshire skittles is played on a Northamptonshire table which is a table that has cushioned "walls" on three sides. The pins are set up near the back wall spaced about 5 inches apart in a diamond shape. Each player has a "turn" in which to throw three skittles trying knock the pins down. It is much like bowling.
This is a rare find, and very nice set of a popular game in the U.K.
