English Tunbridge Ware Work Box
This is a wonderful example of the English Tunbridge Ware design developed by box makers in the 18th and 19th century in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, U.K. . Carefully cut very small pieces of wood are glued to form striped and feathered bandings, as illustrated in this box. This is a nicely designed English work box that measures 10 1/4 inches wide, 6 11/16 inches deep, and 5 1/4 inches high. The box an inlaid escutcheon to the top and a brass key escutcheon on the front. There is no key to the box.
The box is in lovely condition. The walnut shows only minor user wear. There is one couple of repair at the bottom front of the work box.
The interior of the box has been lined stripped paper of greens, blues, reds and whites.
A beautiful box for a variety of uses.
