Antique Mahogany Documents Box with Lined Galvanized Metal Interior
This is an interesting Victorian documents box that is made of mahogany wood. The box is unusually large and sits on a raised base. Corinthian style columns are carved at each corner, has a plant motif carved on to the front panel of the box. The outside of the box measures 16 inches wide, 10 3/8 inches deep, and 7 1/2 inches high. The box is heavy, weighing in at 12 pounds.unusually The wood is in good condition with normal user marks, and nick on the left side.
The box opens revealing a galvanized (zinc over steel) metal lined inner compartment with a metal lift up lid. There are white areas on the metal, which are storage stains made when water corrodes the zinc creating the white powder. The white areas can be removed but you would have to paint over the areas. We chose not to do this so the storage container remains in the condition when we purchased it.
The inner storage compartment is 12 3/4 inches wide, 7 inches long, and 5 1/2 inches deep.
An unusual box from the Victorian Era which would be a great decorator piece.
