Juliana Horatia Ewing's Jackanapes, Victorian Children's Book, 1885
Juliana Horatia Ewing was a writer and editor of a children's journal in England. Jackanapes was inspired by the death of a young French Prince during the Zulu Wars. Ewing wrote the book originally in 1879 without illustrations, but several years later it was illustrated by Randolph Caldecott and published in the form of this book we have for sale.
The book measures 5 1/2 inches by 7 inches and is bound with a hard bound cover. Published in Boston by Roberts Brothers, 1885. There is foxing on the covers and on a few pages of the text. The text is complete, and although there is a bit of foxing, the pages are in good condition. The binding shows wear and there is some separation, as you can see, along a 2 1/2 inch length at the top left.
