Industrie and Glück Antique French Suited Tarock Cards
These are Industrie and Glück (German for industry and luck) French suited playing cards used to play tarock (tarot). The name (Industrie and Gluck) comes from the inscription on the second card, which we have, and you can see in the photos. The full deck of these French suited tarot cards has 54 cards. We have ten of them as seen in the photos. Card X has the inscription, "Annie Oakley Europe." We do know that Annie Oakley performed with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show in 1887 in London, in 1889 during a trip in Europe. Perhaps the card was signed by a fan of Annie Oakley, who also was the owner of the cards.
The cards are blemished with what appears to be foxing, and two of the cards, II and VIII have a corner sniped. The pattern on the back of the cards is in a marbleized design of red, black and yellow. The cards measure 4 13/16 inches x 2 3/4 inches. The card is on thick stock and has rounded corners. The Industrie and Gluck tarock desk of Eastern Europe uses Roman numerals for the trump cards, as shown here.
